The first case of COVID-19 reinfection was reported in Hong Kong on 24 August 2020, nearly 10 days ago. Now, a case of COVID-19 reinfection has been reported in Mumbai. A doctor working in Mumbai's Sion Hospital, who had first contracted the infection about two months ago, has now tested positive for the disease again.
According to a Times of India report, the case was confirmed by Dr Mohan Joshi, Dean, Sion Hospital, who indicated that there was nothing alarming about the case.
"The reinfection came to light about two weeks ago. She tested positive once again and was admitted to Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri," said a Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) representative, adding that the doctor worked in the anesthesia department.
The MARD representative also revealed that the reinfected doctor had received full treatment when she first contracted the infection, and has now recovered for a second time as well.
About a month ago, a patient from a state-run hospital in Mumbai was also considered as a reinfection case. "The patient claimed he tested positive and had a report, but we couldn't get his first sample to study it," said a state official.
The cases of reinfection that have appeared in Mumbai are being discussed in medical circles, said Dr Gagandeep Kang from CMC Vellore at a webinar organised by Tata Institute of Genetics and Society.
However, the BMC has so far denied any reinfections.
