Aamir Khan and his Dangal co-stars were recently on the popular talk show Koffee With Karan, and while I loved all the stories about the making of their latest film, what I couldn’t bear to witness was their ignorance about a serious mental illness like OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

Karan Johar is equally to blame actually. Together they reduced the illness to a joke, a quirk that’s nothing more than being particular about certain things, being fidgety in an anxious situation, and they even compared it to being a perfectionist.

This episode of Koffee With Karan made Varun Gwalani cringe too. He’s a mental health advocate, an author and someone who lives with OCD on a daily basis. But what makes him really angry is that the huge platform that Aamir Khan, Karan Johar and the Bollywood fraternity has at its disposal, it is their responsibility to know better and speak wisely, which in this case they absolutely failed to do.

Why I think none of them have the first clue about OCD, is because if they did, they would’ve realised that it is no laughing matter. They actually joked about bonding over OCD because they think all of them have it!

So Aamir, here’s what OCD is really all about and unless you feel that your condition threatens your life, you can breathe easy because you’re not the ‘king of OCD’ like you claim.

All I have to say is this- the next time you talk about OCD, please don’t reduce it to a hilarious quirk on national television.
