There’s some good news for the citizens of Delhi.

The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 9,053-crore plan to revamp All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The investment is expected to improve and double its institutional and clinical facilities and increase the number of beds in the hospital to at least 5,000 by the year 2024.

A report in the Hindustan Times, states that the constant increase in the number of patients from outside the capital made the investment crucial and necessary. The hospital, on an average, gets about 15,000 patients in their outpatient department (OPD) currently. This figure is expected to double over the next 20 to 30 years.

In addition to the hospital beds, the 5-year expansion plan is also expected to increase the number of hostel rooms and staff houses to more than 3,500 and 500 respectively. A convention centre of 2,500 capacity and two multilevel car parks are also in the plan.

The report states that by moving the campus housing to West Ansari Nagar behind Safdarjung Hospital, the existing campus on East Ansari Nagar will have more space for ‘institutional and clinical work’.

The revamped campus would be more integrated with better infrastructure, better connectivity and a flexible design.

Recently, on March 10, AIIMS also set up a state-of the-art modular operation theatre complex for performing advanced orthopaedic surgeries, thus expanding the existing facilities to reduce the waiting list of patients. Also, robotic spine surgeries were being performed at the facility.

Besides this, for the first time, EOS Low dose biplanar imaging had been introduced which delivered relatively low dose of radiation (50-80 per cent less than conventional X-rays) that the patient receives while allowing a 3D reconstruction of bones.
