Mumbai has recorded its first death due to the Delta Plus COVID-19 variant. A 63-year-old woman who was fully vaccinated succumbed to the infection on 27 July, NDTV reported quoting officials.
This is the second death reported in Maharashtra due to the Delta Plus variant after an 80-year-old woman from Ratnagiri died last month.
The Mumbai woman had several comorbidities including diabetes, according to officials.
She was also fully vaccinated and among seven patients in the city whose reports turned out positive for the Delta Plus variant after genome sequencing.
The Delta Plus is a mutation of the Delta, the highly infectious Delta variant first detected in India during the devastating second wave. In June, the health ministry declared it as variant of concern.
The woman used to suffer from interstitial lung and obstructive airway diseases for which she was being administered oxygen at home, The Indian Express reported.
She was also administered steroids and Remdesivir.
She had taken both her vaccine doses but tested positive on 21 July. On 24 July, she was shifted to a hospital and passed away three days later.
Two of her close contacts have also tested positive for the Delta Plus variant.
The total number of patients infected with the Delta Plus variant has increased to 65 in Maharashtra, according to the state government.
