Here’s the thing. When someone as awesome as super model/super athlete/iron man Milind Soman tells you to do something, you do it!

When we caught up with Milind Soman, he had very clear ideas about why you should quit smoking. Next time when you are thinking of lighting a cigarette, “Procrastinate, procrastinate, procrastinate”, says Soman.

Adverse effects of smoking are not simply confined to your lungs, but they extend all across your body. From the eyes, to skin, to kidneys and the heart - all of these body parts are left vulnerable due to smoking.

However, no matter how bad you thought smoking was, it’s even worse. Recent research says, if a smoker is wheezing it could be an early sign of COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; a progressive lung ailment that leaves 15 million Indians huffing and puffing for air.

So, if quitting smoking is your New Year resolution, here’s another solid health reason to stay committed.

COPD is like a sunburn of your air passages. When cells are exposed to toxic substances for long periods, they tend to get swollen. In COPD, they get inflamed to the point of blocking the air flow. The early symptoms are coughing, bringing up sputum and breathlessness even in mildly strenuous exercises.

According to a study published in the British Thoracic Society, 70 percent of smokers tell their family or friends to see a doctor when they have a persistent cough, but only 15 percent follow the same advice themselves.

Coming back to lighter things for the time being - here’s a look at Soman’s recent achievement as a health enthusiast to inspire you. Earlier this year, he set yet another record. After having successfully completed the Ironman event in 2015, the 51-year-old bagged the title of Ultraman.

The 51-year-old won the title by completing the Florida Ultraman 2017 race over a course of three days – during which he covered a distance of 520 kilometres.

A 10-kilometre swim and a 148-kilometre bike ride comprised the first day, while the second day involved a 276-kilometre bike ride. On the third and final day of the race, Soman completed an 84-kilometre run.
