Delhi buses will be soon be installed with budget-friendly air pollution monitoring mechanisms. At first, 150-200 buses will be installed with these mechanisms.
These devices, named ‘Aerogram’ will be installed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi from September 2019 to February 2020 as these are the peak months of air pollution.
As per a report in The Times of India (TOI), they are sensor-based devices that will measure and understand the different factors that contribute to the rise of pollution in the environment.
These devices will be installed in partnership with Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).
Rijureka Sen, an assistant professor at computer science department, IIT is the lead investigator of the project. He is working on this project under the patronage of the Center of Excellence for Research on Clean Air. He was provided with Rs. 5 lakh for the project.
He told The Times of India (TOI) that each bus will do 16 daily trips, covering routes of 30-40 kilometres. The installation of these devices will help collect particulate matter data across different terrains, weather and times of the day.
