Suicide In India: 381 Suicides Reported Daily in 2019 on Average

India reported an average of 381 deaths by suicide daily in 2019, totalling 1,39,123 over the year. The rate of suicide (incidents per once lac people) rose by 0.2 percent during 2019 over 2018, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.

The numbers imply that a person died by suicide every four minutes in the country in 2019.

A majority of the suicides were reported in Maharashtra, followed by Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka accounting for 13.6 percent, 9.7 percent, 9.1 percent, 9.0 per cent and 8.1 percent of total suicides, respectively. These five states together accounted for 49.5 percent of the total suicides reported in the country.

Family Problems (32.4%) and illnesses (17.1%) were the major causes of suicides. Drug abuse, marriage related issues, love affairs, bankruptcy or indebtness, failure in examination, unemployment, professional problems and property disputes were some other reported reaasons.

More than 65% of the suicide victims had an annual income of less than one lac, 29.6% belonged to the annual income group of one lakh to less than five lac.

A total of 10,281 persons involved in farming sector were among the total who died by suicide during 2019, accounting for 7.4% of total suicides victims (1,39,123) in the country.

The overall male-female ratio among those who killed themselves in 2019 was 70.2 males to 29.8 females, which is more when compared to 2018 (68.5 males to 31.5 females).
