Letting teenagers sleep in might lead to an increase in student’s earnings by $17,500 (about Rs 11 lakh) over a course of their lifetime, according to a report by The New York Times.

The report suggests that if schools start at 8.30 am or later in the US, where more than 90 percent of the high schools and more than 80 percent middle schools start before the time, the academic benefit would be equivalent to about two additional months of schooling. This would, in turn, mean better earnings over a course of a student’s life.

It has the potential of contributing $83 billion to the economy within a decade.

Referring to six other studies, the report points out that a delay of 25 to 60 minutes in the school timing can result in an increase of 25 to 77 minutes of sleep per day.

Hiccups in Changing Timings

Delaying school timings would obviously involve overcoming some initial speed-breakers. Not only would it increase transport costs, it would lead to a delay in after-school timings as well, forcing a change in timings of parents’ schedules, potentially disrupting their jobs and routine.

Additionally, changes in transportation would increase the cost per student by $150, while infrastructural updates would cost schools about $110,000.

However, the increased sleep would lead to better academic achievement and student’s earnings. The costs would be outweighed by benefits by the second year. The benefits would almost be double and triple the cost in a decade and 15 years, respectively.

The trade-off involves better eventual earnings as compared to the investment, the report further pointed out. The delayed timings are also expected to bring a fall in car crash mortality.
