The Union IT Ministry has reportedly directed Facebook and Google to remove all ‘malicious and fake content’ related to food safety and quality in India, reports The Times of India. It has further asked the IT giants to block those who spread fake news regarding food.
Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) CEO Pawan Agarwal had reportedly raised these concerns with the Information and Technology Ministry.
In a note sent these companies, the ministry says, “Specific instances like creating false scare of plastic eggs, plastic rice, melamine in milk... wherein it was maliciously projected that FSSAI had given permission for use of melamine in milk”
FSSAI fears that these stories will erode confidence of consumers on food safety controllers in India.
