The Delta variant has wrecked havoc in the world since it emerged in March 2020. Since then, as is expected of viruses, this variant too has seen several mutations.
Although most mutations are relatively benign, scientists have been keeping an eye out for certain Delta variant mutations like the Delta plus variant.
Insacog (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium) in it's latest bulletin has flagged another sub-lineage of the variant, called AY.12, that has been noticed in many states in India.
The sub-lineage has also been reported in Israel, and is thought to be behind the fresh surge in cases in the country.
What Do We Know About AY.12?
AY.12 is only one of many sub-lineages and mutations of the delta variant that have been classified by epidiamologists.
According to Insacog's latest weekly bulletin, "AY.12, a reassigned sub-lineage of Delta is being seen in many states."
According to Insacog, the numbers will require closer examination.
The report also mentioned that it is not known how the sub-lineage is different than Delta and what the real world impact of these changes are.
It is yet too early to tell if the sub-lineage posses any more danger than the parent lineage of the delta variant or if it is more infectious.
Insacog in their report also added, "the two appear to be very similar at a molecular level."
For the time being Insacog is keeping an eye on cases of AY.12 emerging in the country while further studies are conducted.
Delta is the major variant of concern in India as in many other countries of the world.
Other sub-linages of the delta variant currently being watched are AY.1, AY.2, and AY.3classified together as Delta plus among others.
