Mental health issues don’t discriminate. Not even for royalty. Prince William has opened up about how becoming a parent has changed his mental health when it comes to dealing with work. In the recent years, he has been an outspoken advocate for destigmatising mental health. And now has spoken out about his own issues.

The 36-year-old future King of England is father to Prince George (5), Princess Charlotte (3) and Prince Louis (6 months). He worked in the emergency services as an air ambulance pilot. He explained that he couldn’t separate the job from his personal life. And some accidents involving kids that the royal dad witnessed on the job took a toll on him.

Earlier this year, William launched Mental Health at Work, a free UK-wide portal for employers and employees, adding to their ongoing mental health campaign.

People magazine quoted him as saying:

The relation between the job and the personal life was what really took me over the edge. And I started feeling things that I’ve never felt before. And I got very sad and very down about this particular family. You start to take away bits of the job and keep them in your body.

He continued to explain that the logical place to talk about it is at work, which is why it is so important that companies are given sufficient tools to tackle mental health issues.

“What I’ve noticed is we could really use some more voices in the workplace. Standing up and saying, ‘Yeah, I’ve been there. I’ve done that, and I could have done more,” he said. “I think setting a culture of this open, understanding, supportive environment in the workplace where HR is a door that people feel they can go to, I think that’s really important.”

Just goes to show mental well-being has got nothing do with being rich, famous and having a happy family. It’s an illness and it can affect anyone.
