World Alzheimer’s Day: Importance, History, Theme of 2021 & Quotes
Alzheimer's day is celebrated to push the governments to come up with better policies and healthcare programmes.
World’s Alzheimer’s Day is observed to spread awareness about Alzheimer’s among people, to fight against the stigma related to Alzheimer’s, and to ask for better policies and health care system for the Alzheimer’s patients.
Up to 80 percent of the population in India, are not aware of the symptoms or the disease itself. Poor access to medical health facilities means nearly 90 percent of the patients suffering from Alzheimer’s are not under any proper medical treatment. Other factors include lack of financial support, fear of judgement and lack of family support.
Add to that, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s and dementia till date and research in this field has been lacking. The process of brain cells damage can only be slowed down with the help of a few drugs and health care programs.
Alzheimer's Day: History
Why is the disease known as “Alzheimer’s Dementia”?
It is named after scientist Dr Alois Alzheimer, who first noticed the symptoms related to reading, writing, memorising and unpredictable behaviour in a woman in the year 1906 and then tested her brain tissues.
The Theme for 2021
The theme for the 10th year of this global campaign, year 2021, is “ Know dementia, know Alzheimer’s”. It emphasises the power of knowledge. It is important that more and more people are aware of the disease and spread the knowledge further. It shall be of great help to diagnose the disease at its earliest stage and prevent the worsening of the situation.
On 21 September, the report on Alzheimer’s titled “The journey through the diagnosis of Dementia” shall be launched.
The main aim being to get the attention of the governments, health care facilities, and other authorities and ask them for the policies covering the wellbeing of these patients.
Anyone can participate in the campaign, either by passing messages on social media, seeking more information and advice, organising webinars with the experts and doctors to fight against the stigma related to Alzheimer’s, or participating in the events organised by the local dementia organisations.
