He’s furry, he’s fat — he’s a cool, orange cat.

He is nothing like Macavity — the mysterious yet irresistibly debonair feline. In fact, “his” persona is completely antipodal to hers. Yet no one defines ‘cool’ like him. A lazy, fat, orange cat who hates Mondays — yes, we are indeed talking about Garfield. During the 1970s, artist Jim Davis was looking to create a “good, marketable character”. And he did. Nothing captures the everydayness of the “marketed” American life as Garfield — a fat cat who glorifies consumption, and is the epitome of indolence and indifference.

While there was no presence of Indian women in World War I, the British run-Indian Army recruited female volunteers to form the Women’s Auxiliary Corps (India) for the second world war in May 1942. Though they were confined to clerical or domestic duties, this was the first and only time, until 1992, women served the Indian Army in non-medical roles.

Initially, women recruits had to be of 18 years. By December 1942, the minimum age was reduced to 17 years and 11,500 Indian women were enlisted by the end of the war.

Most women no longer need fashion advice — indeed, no advice at all! But please allow us this one liberty of advising you against wearing skinny jeans.

Why, you may ask? Because there’s more to your legs than them looking like tree branches. Also, because skinny jeans are fashionable asphyxiation of the legs; a corset for the thighs; a third degree in a temperature of 45 degrees.

Vandana Malik’s weight loss journey is one for the books!
